Fresno Officials Criticize Newsom’s New Gun Control Laws as Ineffective

Objectivity 4.3 | Credibility 4.8 | Relevance 4.7

Officials in Fresno County, California, have criticized Gov. Gavin Newsom for signing gun control bills into law. The recently signed Senate Bill 2 imposes stricter requirements for concealed carry permits, including 16 hours of training and obtaining at least two references. Fresno County Sheriff John Zanoni and District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp argue, however, that such laws don’t address the real issue as the majority of gun crimes are committed by those who illegally obtain firearms. They believe that criminals will continue to carry guns regardless of these restrictions. Additionally, Newsom signed a law doubling taxes on guns and ammunition, adding an 11 percent tax to the existing 11 percent federal excise tax.
