Fox News Taps Univision Anchor for GOP Debate on Immigration and Amnesty

Objectivity 3.8 | Credibility 4.5 | Relevance 4.6

Fox News selected Colombian-born anchor Ilia Calderon from Univision to host a GOP primary debate, focusing on promoting amnesty for 11 million undocumented migrants and DACA recipients. Calderon posed a question to Governor Chris Christie regarding his stance on a “path to citizenship” for undocumented immigrants, highlighting the shift in his position over time. Fox News executives allowed Calderon to introduce herself in Spanish for Univision’s audience and displayed Univision’s logo during the debate. Christie endorsed amnesty for migrants who can “fill the six million vacant jobs we have, but only if you come here to follow the law, and only if you come here legally.”  Narrow questions to individual candidates hindered debate on crucial topics such as immigration, amnesty, and border security. Fox News founder Rupert Murdoch has a history of advocating for increased migration, although previous efforts at a Spanish-language network quietly failed in 2016.
