‘Non-Binary’ Author Says: “Parental Rights Really Anger Me”

“Non-binary” author Alex Gino recently expressed his disdain for parental rights, saying they “really anger” him.  Alex Gino, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, wrote a novel in 2015 titled “Melissa” about a 10-year-old boy who wants to be a girl.  The book has been banned by seven school districts in four states. Gino wants to “empower” young readers to choose books that reflect their own identities and experiences, and criticized the idea of “age-appropriate” literature, saying it is a way of censoring diverse voices and perspectives.  He hopes his book will inspire more acceptance and compassion for transgender and non-binary people. Gino told Yahoo! that he believes parents should not have the final say over what their children read.
