Kansas Bans Changing Gender on Birth Certificates

Objectivity 4.7 | Credibility 4.7 | Relevance 4.7

After a legal conflict between Kansas attorney general and state agencies, the state has made it illegal to change the original gender recorded on a birth certificate. Kansas AG Kris Kobach won a lawsuit to stop state agencies, such as Kansas Department of Health and Environment, from allowing gender changes on state documents. The health department is required to follow the new law and has posted on their website: “In accordance with Senate Bill 180, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment can no longer process gender identity amendments on birth certificates.” Kansas Governor had vetoed the law back in April, however, the Republican controlled legislature overruled the veto and passed the law in July.
