Meta, parent company of Facebook, has released a report alleging that China and Russia conducted mass misinformation campaigns across multiple platforms. The report says that the Chinese campaign targeted several countries including Taiwan, the United States, Australia and other countries with Chinese-speaking audiences. The campaign was designed to give China’s human rights record a positive spin and suppress negative comments about China. The operation spanned over 50 social media platforms including Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, Pinterest and others. Many of the accounts involved were associated with people in Chinese law enforcement. The Russian campaign, known as Doppelgänger which was first discovered in September 2022, created websites that mimicked major news organizations to publish fake articles as propaganda to discredit Ukraine. One notable example was a fake Washington Post article in which Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was a CIA puppet.
