Florida Gov. DeSantis has extended a state of emergency to 46 out of 67 counties as Hurricane Idalia is expected to hit on Wednesday. Upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane, it’s projected to become a major hurricane with life-threatening storm surges upon making landfall. The storm’s current location is around 85 miles north of Cuba’s tip, with winds of 75 mph and moving north at 14 mph. DeSantis confirmed hurricane warnings for the Gulf Coast, activating National Guardsmen and shelters. President Biden approved an Emergency Declaration, freeing federal funds. Residents are preparing with sandbags, evacuations, and power outage plans. Idalia will affect Florida, then Georgia and the Carolinas.
