Garland Appoints Weiss as Special Counsel in Hunter Biden Investigation

On Friday Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that David Weiss, U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware, has been appointed as special counsel in the DOJ’s ongoing investigation of Hunter Biden. Garland said of Weiss’ appointment, it is “consistent with the Department of Justice regulations governing such matters.”  Weiss led the investigation into Hunter where charges were filed, then announced Hunter’s plea bargain deal that would likely result in no prison time.  However, the “sweetheart deal” fell apart and Hunter pleaded not guilty.  Weiss’ appointment as special counsel coincided with the news of Hunter’s case heading to trial amid the collapsed plea deal. House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) said, “The Biden Justice Department is trying to stonewall congressional oversight as we have presented evidence to the American people about the Biden family’s corruption.”
