Saudi Arabia Hosts Talks On Ending Russia-Ukraine War

Objectivity 4.8 | Credibility 4.8 | Relevance 4.6

Over the weekend Saudi Arabia hosted 42 countries which gathered to discuss how to bring an end to the nearly 18-month war between Russia and Ukraine.  Among the countries attending were four of the five BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries; Russia was not invited.  While one source said that China “participated actively and was positive,” Brazil’s delegation decried the absence of Russia saying “any real negotiation must include all parties.”  The meetings did not produce a definitive peace plan but there was agreement on some points including respect for Ukraine’s “territorial integrity and sovereignty” and should be “at the heart of any peace settlement.”  The Ukrainian delegation pushed President Volodymyr Zelensky’s 10-point peace plan which calls for the restoration of Ukraine’s territory including Crimea.  Russia has in the past said any negotiations would need to take into account “new territorial realities.”
