Biden Administration Suggests Possible Deployment of Sunlight Blocking Technology

Objectivity 4.8 | Credibility 4.8 | Relevance 4.4

Despite warnings from experts, the White House is considering the “possible deployment” of artificially blocking sunlight as part of its climate change agenda. Solar radiation modification (SRM) is a type of radical climate change technique that can have devastating effects on the planet, according to experts. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy published a report on June 30.  The report acknowledged that the SRM research program could help the U.S. prepare for a “possible deployment” through public or private sectors, but also warns about several potential negative consequences of SRM. In January 2022, a group of scientists and scholars called for an international non-use agreement on solar engineering in an open letter, arguing that such a deal will  “inhibit further normalization and development of a risky and poorly understood set of technologies that seek to intentionally manage incoming sunlight at planetary scale.”
