Scientists Warn Solar Maximum May Hit Before 2025

The current solar cycle has been underway since 2019 and has been forecasted to peak in 2025.  Since the cycle began, the sun has become more active, releasing solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and geomagnetic storms.  The total number of sunspots was at its highest in eight years as of December 2022.  Alex James, solar physicist at the University of College London, said the sun’s increase in solar activity is a warning sign that the solar maximum could arrive by the end of the year, according to Live Science.  This is bad news for the digital economy on Earth as solar flares can spark geomagnetic storms and cause disruptions to satellites and even power grids.  Other solar physicists warn, “We are poorly prepared.”  In 2016 the Obama Administration signed an executive order titled “Coordinating Efforts to Prepare the Nation for Space Weather Events” to address potential grid-down events by solar storms.
