The Messenger is reporting that a senior U.S. intelligence official has said that plans to evacuate American citizens from Taiwan have “heated up over the past two months or so.”  A “heightened level of tension” is driving the evacuation preparations, but that they are being kept quiet as it is a sensitive subject for the Taiwanese government.  Mark Cancian, a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said, “The fact that the U.S. is doing this doesn’t mean that they expect there will be a war.  It’s only a statement that there could be a war.”  The report comes after ten Chinese warplanes crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and Chinese warships conducted combat patrols over the weekend; these events are becoming a familiar pattern of aggressive behavior by the Chinese military.  An estimated 80,000 American citizens live in Taiwan as of 2019.
