On Thursday after former President Donald Trump announced the DOJ had indicted him over classified documents, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) came to his defense.  McCarthy tweeted, “Today is indeed a dark day for the United States of America.”  He called the news of the historic federal indictment “unconscionable” because it was made against the frontrunner of the 2024 Republican presidential bid.  He pointed out discoveries of classified documents found earlier this year at President Biden’s home and office, saying, “Joe Biden kept classified documents for decades.”  He added, “I, and every American who believes in the rule of law, stand with President Trump against this grave injustice. House Republicans will hold this brazen weaponization of power accountable.”
