Ethnic Unrest Erupts In Northern Kosovo

Objectivity 4.8 | Credibility 4.8 | Relevance 4.8

Ethnic unrest has erupted in Northern Kosovo over the weekend after Serbian protestors surrounded municipal buildings in protest over recent elections.  Kosovo police seized the buildings which has created more unrest.  Kosovo police and even NATO troops have been called in to guard the buildings which has led to injuries on both sides.  Serbia has responded by raising the combat readiness of troops along the border with Kosovo and promised to intervene if Serbians in Kosovo are attacked again.  The region has a complicated history but gained worldwide attention in the late 1990’s when ethnic Albanians rebelled against Serbian rule and the conflict ultimately required U.N. peacekeepers to intervene. Kosovo declared independence in 2008 but Serbia has never recognized Kosovo as a separate state.  Since that time international negotiations have failed to produce a long-term resolution.
