Chinese Cities Increasing Civil Defense Efforts

Objectivity 4.8 | Credibility 4.8 | Relevance 4.6

Chinese cities in the coastal provinces of Guangdong, Zhejiang and Fujian have stepped up efforts aimed at being ready in case the country should find itself at war. The efforts include the building of new civil defense and mobilization offices, wartime medical rescue hospitals, the creation of an app which guides civilians to shelters, and city-wide air defense exercises which include military and civilian civil defense forces, firefighters, emergency medical personnel and even electric utility representatives. The city of Xiamen, located on China’s southeast coast and an expected target if China goes to war with Taiwan, recently held the updated drills on May 10. One resident posted on Chinese social media Weibo, “[I] was lying in bed and thought a Taiwan Strait war broke out.”
