Ukraine’s air force claims that it has shot down a Russian KH-47 Kinzhal-type hypersonic missile using an American Patriot missile defense system. The Kinzhal is air-launched from Russian jets, flying 2,000 km at over 12,000 km/h. Ukrainian Air Force commander Mykola Oleshchuk said via Telegram, “Yes, we shot down the ‘unique’ Kinzhal.  It happened during the night-time attack on May 4 in the skies of the Kyiv region.”  Ukraine has received at least 4 Patriot units from the U.S., Germany and The Netherlands but the exact number is unknown.  AP News reported that Russia-backed governor of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia province ordered the evacuation of over 1,500 civilians around the nuclear power plant, raising concern that fighting near the plant could cause a radiation leak.  International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi said the situation “is becoming increasingly unpredictable and potentially dangerous.”
