Biden’s trip to Northern Ireland a Missed Opportunity

Objectivity 4.8| Credibility 4.8 | Relevance 4.8

President Biden’s visit to Northern Ireland to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement has been stated by some as a missed opportunity.  Northern Ireland has been without a power-sharing government since February 2022.  Other parties have implied that the presidential itinerary would have been more effective had the Northern Ireland Assembly been fully operational.  The Democratic Unionist Party will not allow a coalition to be formed until there are no post-Brexit economic barriers between Northern Ireland and the rest of the U.K.  The White House welcomed the Windsor Framework deal between the U.K. and E.U. created to address unionists’ concerns.  The British government had hoped President Biden’s visit would bolster the framework as the internationally recognized solution.
