Chinese Spy Balloon Collected Intelligence From Military Sites; Transmitted to Beijing in Real Time

Objectivity 3.8 | Credibility 4.5 | Relevance 4.8

Two senior U.S. officials and one former senior administration official said the Chinese spy balloon that flew across the U.S. was gathering intelligence from sensitive military sites and transmitting the information back to Beijing in real time.  The balloon was controlled remotely from China making multiple passes over sites, sometimes flying in figure-eight formations.  The officials said the intelligence collected was mostly from electronic signals rather than images and they claim the Biden administration’s efforts impeded the balloon from gathering more intelligence by stopping them from broadcasting and emitting signals.  It is unclear why the balloon’s self-destruct mechanism which could be remotely activated by China was not triggered.
