Evan Gershkovich, U.S. citizen and reporter for the Wall Street Journal, has been arrested by the Russian FSB security service for allegedly spying while in the city of Yekaterinburg in the Urals. In a statement, the FSB said, “It has been established that E. Gershkovich, acting on an assignment from the American side, was gathering information classified as a state secret about the activity of one of the enterprises of Russia’s military-industrial complex.” The Wall Street Journal issued a statement as well saying it “vehemently denies the allegations from the FSB and seeks the immediate release of our trusted and dedicated reporter” and that it was “deeply concerned” for Gershkovich’s safety.
