Regulations to rein in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) systems has drawn bipartisan support from the 118th Congress following a dramatic warning from tech leaders, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak. Leader of the Senate AI Caucus Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) said, “I think what you have to do is, to identify what is not allowed in terms of ethics and illegal activities, whether it is AI or not – you impose on AI activities the same level of ethics and privacy that you do for other competencies today.” Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) cautioned against rushing into action until gaining a better understanding of the technology. Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI) co-led legislation in the previous session of Congress to enact more regulations on AI’s expansion.
