An open letter urging artificial intelligence (AI) developers to “immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4,” signed by Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and more than 1000 tech leaders and AI experts, was issued by the Future of Life Institute. They argue that the future of AI systems should be guided by independent overseers through the development of safety protocols due to AI’s potential risks to society. GPT-4, OpenAI’s’ latest deep learning model, “exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks.” The letter warns of the risks of propaganda and lies spreading through AI-generated articles that appear authentic. It also warns of jobs becoming obsolete as AI programs could potentially outperform workers.
