Florida’s southwest coast has experienced a sudden outburst of toxic red algae which has caused at least 3 tons of dead fish to wash up on local beaches since the beginning of March. But now, local residents are also complaining of burning eyes and difficulty breathing.  Florida officials have said that the strongest concentrations are along the coastline in Pinellas and Sarasota counties which encompass the greater Tampa area including Clearwater and Saint Petersburg.  The latest bloom began last October and is expected to continue through at least next month.
