An 81-year-old Air Force veteran and former NASA employee, Jerry Jouret, survived for a week after being trapped alone in his car during a winter storm. While driving home from California to Nevada, the winter storm caused road closures forcing him to take an alternate route where his SUV got stuck in the snow. When his family filed a missing persons report, California Highway Patrol Inland Division Air Operations deployed and found him after a six-hour helicopter search. He was taken to a nearby hospital and discharged the same day. His wisdom and practical experience, along with food, water, and warm clothes that he kept in his car, sustained him until he was found. Jouret’s grandson said, “If someone gets trapped, don’t give up hope.”
