The Biden Administration is set to announce that the U.S. will be selling advanced nuclear submarines to Australia as the country seeks to modernize its navy in light of the growing threat from China. The announcement is planned as part of the 18-month old AUKUS agreement between Australia, the U.K. and the U.S. The deal also entails the cancelation of Australia’s deal with France to buy conventional submarines which caused diplomatic issues that took months to smooth over. The deal, which thus far has been kept secret, is set to be announced next week as U.S. President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak meet in San Diego.
