The Chinese Foreign Ministry has released a statement along with a vaguely worded proposal calling for a cease-fire and peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. The plan calls for the “sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all countries†to be respected but does not mention what would happen to territory occupied by Russia since the invasion began. The proposal also calls for an end to all sanctions against Russia. Experts were quick to criticize the proposal, not only for speaking in vague generalities, but also doubting the sincerity of China’s “neutral” stance given the country’s “no limits friendship†with Russia.
