California Secretary of State Dr. Shirley N. Weber proposed a law in 2020 that was signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) in the midst of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ frenzy.  Under the law, reparations may amount to $230,000 per recipient, however, some say this is not adequate.  A committee was assembled to review proposals for reparations then make recommendations to the legislature later this year.  Weber said, “The process of creating this whole task force … was to create some sense of equity and fairness in the conversation, to create an opportunity for this state to basically lead the nation in what needs to happen with reparations.”
