The New York Senate introduced a bill to allow mentally ill male prisoners to change their gender to a non-male identity and be admitted in women’s prisons. The Senate Bill “Gender Identity, Respect, Dignity, and Safety Act†permits male inmates to be relocated into penal centers or “other institutions†that align to their self-perceived “gender identity” regardless of whether the “gender transition†occurred before or after incarceration. “Incarcerated women are rightly petrified while state legislators imagine themselves as civil rights heroes” Amanda Stulman, the USA director for Keep Prisons Single Sex (KPSS) stated.
