McCarthy Under Pressure To Win Or Step Aside

U.S. Representative Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has failed six votes over two days to win next Speaker of the House with mounting pressure from Republicans and Democrats to resolve this or step aside. With the House unable to open fully until a Speaker is elected, McCarthy has appealed to fellow Republicans who are seeking more influence over the way Congress conducts business. Representative-elect Byron Donalds (R-FL) has been nominated as an alternative in the last three votes. The House is scheduled to resume on Thursday at noon. McCarthy said late Wednesday, “No deal yet, but a lot of progress.”
