On Tuesday Texas Governor Greg Abbott started placing empty shipping containers along the US border in El Paso, Texas, adding to the razor wire and presence of the National Guard to deter illegal immigrants. Although still in effect, Title 42 was scheduled to end on December 21, which led to a dramatic increase in illegal border crossings causing the city to declare a state of emergency. Gov. Abbott tweeted about adding the containers, “Together, the strategies are causing illegal immigration at that location to plummet.” The number of border crossings has significantly decreased since the containers were added.
