An investigation into Southwest Airlines has been initiated by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) after the airline had an “unacceptable rate of cancellations and delays” during Winter Storm Elliot.  The DOT tweeted, “The Department will examine whether cancellations were controllable and if Southwest is complying with its customer service plan.” Southwest Airlines said in a news release, “We were fully staffed and prepared for the approaching holiday weekend when the severe weather swept across the continent.”  An aviation expert for over 30 years, Jay Ratliff said the storm affected all U.S. airline travel to some extent, however Southwest is to blame for a large part of the problems.
