Chinese State-sponsored Hackers Stole Millions in COVID Relief Benefits: Secret Service

Chinese State-sponsored hackers known as APT41 stole at least $20 million in U.S. COVID-19 relief benefits, the first acknowledged incident of pandemic fraud linked to foreign, state-sponsored cybercriminals, according to the Secret Service. The Secret Service said there are more than 1,000 ongoing investigations with regards to theft from public benefits programs. According to U.S. law enforcement officials and cybersecurity experts, APT41’s theft could be just the tip of the iceberg.
