Nearly 1 in 10 public school students in New York City were homeless last year. According to an annual report released by Advocates For Children New York, 66% of the students live with a relative due to lack of financial resources, 28% live in city shelters, and 5% are entirely unsheltered. To give perspective, Executive Director of Advocates for Children Kim Sweet said, “If these 100,000 children made up their own school district, it would be a district larger than 99.5% of all other districts nationwide.”
