6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Chinese Region Already Under COVID-19 Lockdown

Twenty-one people have been reported killed in a 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck China’s Sichuan province. The earthquake has triggered landslides and damaged buildings in Chengdu, the province capital, which is in the midst of a near-total lockdown due to China’s “zero-COVID” policy.  Chengdu is also experiencing a heat wave and drought adversely affecting the region which is reliant upon hydropower.
