SC Supreme Court Blocks Heartbeat Bill, Near-Total Abortion Ban Moves Forward in State House

The South Carolina Supreme Court temporarily blocked a law on Wednesday that protects unborn babies who have a heartbeat. The Heartbeat Bill took effect shortly after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on June 24, spurring Planned Parenthood to file a lawsuit challenging the bill. While on Tuesday, the Republican-led state legislature passed its near-total abortion ban bill, titled the “South Carolina Human Life Protection Act,” out of the state House Judiciary Committee. It is now on its way to the state House floor for consideration.
