New York Concealed Carry Law Overturned by Supreme Court

A 1913 New York law restricting citizens from carrying concealed firearms has been overturned by the Supreme Court. In a 6-3 vote, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the law’s requirement “violates the Fourteenth Amendment by preventing law-abiding citizens with ordinary self-defense needs from exercising their right to keep and bear arms in public.”  Justice Samuel Alito, in response to dissent from Justice Stephen Breyer, asked, “Does the dissent think that laws like New York’s prevent or deter such atrocities? Will a person bent on carrying out a mass shooting be stopped if he knows that it is illegal to carry a handgun outside the home?
