Six major Chinese firms previously mined rare earth metals, but the CCP integrated several state-owned companies to create the China Rare Earth Group. China controls perhaps up to 90% of global supplies of rare earth metals. Washington is worried that Beijing could use its dominance over supplies for strategic purposes. The U.S. plans to increase mining operations to counter China’s dominance over the global market.
