Coal Shortage in India Threatens Nationwide Blackouts

Due to a shortage of coal, 20 coal-fired power plants have closed across India resulting in power outages. Over half of India’s 135 coal-fired power plants, which provide about 70% of the nation’s electricity, have less than 3 days of coal stockpiled. The Government of India tried to squelch blackout concerns by saying it has enough coal to satisfy the demand of its power plants, despite many power outages already happening.
