According to the U.S. drought monitor map, 11 western states are experiencing extreme drought conditions. In California, 2 million acres—more than one-quarter of the state’s irrigated farmland—is receiving 5 percent or less of its water supply. This is concerning as California is the leading state in agriculture, producing over 400 different commodities, including two-thirds of the nation’s fruit and nuts, one-third of its vegetables, and one out of every five gallons of milk. This drought-related food supply issue comes as our food supply chains are already weakened by the disastrous lockdown policies of the CoVid-19 pandemic.
